I thought about this and knew this could be good and bad influences, but do we really want to claim those bad influences? I think the answer is yes because each of them helps to create who you are. Of course our first influences are parents, and that is not any different for me. They could provide good and bad influences because we all have good and bad habits, and they are the ones that mold us, but once we get on our own is where we really find our influences.
Once I left the nest, my influences expanded to include friends that I worked with and learned with. They helped to develop my points of view as a young adult, but they became a mere background to my creative side, where my influences became the writers’ books I read. They provided me with different points of view to the world that I have today. It is amazing how writers can do that.
Influences are all around us, but the important thing to realize is that they are only influences; we must develop our own voice and points of view. I will always look to those people who influenced me, and appreciate every one of them because they made me who I am today, and my continued growth as a person.
